Nintendo Direct February 2024 Roundup: Every Announcement That Matters

Nintendo dropped a packed Direct today and there’s a lot to digest. Here are the biggest announcements and what they mean for Switch owners.

    Metroid Prime 4: Beyond

    paper mario: the origami king

After years of silence and a full development restart, we finally got a proper look at Metroid Prime 4. The trailer showed Samus on a new planet with stunning visuals that push the Switch to its limits. No release date yet, but it’s confirmed for Switch.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Remake

The beloved GameCube RPG is getting a full remake for Switch, releasing May 23rd. The new art style is gorgeous — it keeps the paper aesthetic while adding modern lighting and effects. This is one of the most requested remakes in Nintendo history and it looks like they’re doing it justice.

Building the Ultimate Nintendo Game Room: A Step-by-Step Guide

New year, new game room? Whether you’re converting a spare bedroom, finishing a basement, or just carving out a corner of your living room, here’s how to create the ultimate Nintendo-themed gaming space.

    The Display Setup

    splatoon 3

For modern Switch gaming, a 4K TV with good HDR and low input lag is ideal — the Switch outputs at 1080p docked, but a quality 4K TV with good upscaling makes a noticeable difference. For retro gaming, consider keeping a CRT TV. Games designed for CRT displays look and feel better on them, especially light gun games.

    Shelving and Display Cases

IKEA Kallax shelves are the collector’s best friend — the cube compartments are perfect for displaying amiibo, game boxes, and collectible figures. Add LED strip lighting behind shelves for a professional display look. Our collectibles section has plenty of display-worthy pieces.

    Seating

    super mario question block cap

Invest in a good gaming chair or a comfortable couch — you’ll be spending hours here. For retro gaming sessions on the floor (as nature intended), oversized floor cushions or bean bags work great. Our Pokemon Snorlax Bean Bag Chair is literally made for this.

    The Finishing Touches

Wall art, LED signs, and themed decor bring it all together. Our Splatoon Inkling LED Sign and Question Block Lamp are popular choices. Frame some game manuals or posters for an authentic touch.

  • Super Mario Bros. Wonder Review: 2D Mario Is Back and Better Than Ever

Super Mario Bros. Wonder Review: 2D Mario Is Back and Better Than Ever

After years of the “New” series playing it safe, Super Mario Bros. Wonder takes 2D Mario in a bold, creative direction — and it absolutely works.

    The Wonder Effect

    super mario maker 2

The headline feature is the Wonder Flower, which transforms each level in unexpected ways when collected. Pipes might start walking, the perspective might shift, you might turn into a Goomba — the possibilities feel endless and the game never repeats the same trick twice. It’s the most surprising Mario game in decades.

    Art and Animation

The visual overhaul is stunning. Characters are more expressive than ever, with fluid animations that give them real personality. The Flower Kingdom setting allows for vibrant, diverse worlds that feel fresh compared to the grass-desert-ice-fire formula.

    Multiplayer That Actually Works

new super mario bros. u deluxe

The online multiplayer, where you see ghost-like shadows of other players, is a stroke of genius. You can’t grief each other but you can help by leaving standees as checkpoints. It makes the world feel alive without the chaos of traditional co-op platforming.

Score: 9/10 — A joyful reinvention of 2D Mario. Creative, gorgeous, and endlessly surprising. Essential for any Switch owner.

  • How to Spot Fake Retro Nintendo Cartridges: A Collector’s Guide

How to Spot Fake Retro Nintendo Cartridges: A Collector’s Guide

The retro game market is booming, and unfortunately, so is the counterfeit market. As prices for sought-after titles climb, fake cartridges become more sophisticated and more common. Here’s how to protect yourself.

    The Label

    goldeneye 007 (n64) - cart

Start with the front label. Authentic Nintendo labels have a specific glossy finish and crisp printing. Common red flags include slightly fuzzy text, colors that seem too saturated or too dull compared to reference images, and labels that sit slightly crooked or don’t quite fit the cartridge shell.

For Game Boy games, check the “Nintendo” logo stamped into the label — on fakes, this stamp is often missing or poorly impressed.

    The Cartridge Shell

Feel the plastic. Authentic Nintendo carts have a specific texture and weight. Fakes often feel lighter or have a slightly different plastic grain. Check the screw on the back — SNES and N64 carts use a gamebit security screw, not a standard Phillips head.

    The Board

    star fox 64 (n64) - cart

When in doubt, open it up. Authentic boards will have the Nintendo logo, the game’s code printed on the ROM chips, and clean soldering. Fakes often have generic chips with hand-written labels, glob-top chips (black blobs), or obviously different PCB layouts.

    Buy From Trusted Sources

The easiest way to avoid fakes? Buy from sellers who verify authenticity. At Power-Up Games, every retro cartridge is opened, inspected, and tested before listing. We guarantee authenticity on every item in our retro collection.

  • Our Summer Gaming Tournament Was a Blast — Here’s the Recap

Our Summer Gaming Tournament Was a Blast — Here’s the Recap

Last Saturday, over 60 gamers descended on the Power-Up Games store for our first-ever Summer Smash Tournament, and it was everything we hoped it would be and more.

    The Tournament

    mario kart 8 deluxe

The main event was a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate double-elimination bracket with 32 entrants. The matches were intense — highlights included an incredible comeback in losers’ finals where a Kirby player reverse 3-stocked a Meta Knight, and a grand finals set that went to game 5, last stock.

We also ran side events including a Mario Kart time trial challenge, a Splatoon 3 paint-off, and a retro gaming corner where people could play classic NES and SNES games on CRT monitors. The retro corner ended up being one of the most popular areas — turns out there’s something magical about playing Super Mario World on original hardware.

    Community Spirit

The best part wasn’t the competition — it was watching complete strangers bond over their shared love of Nintendo. We saw new friendships form, heard amazing gaming stories, and even had a few impromptu Pokemon card trading sessions break out.

We raised $340 for Extra Life through entry fees and donations. Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed!

We’re already planning our next event. Follow us on social media to stay in the loop!

  • Pikmin 4 Review: Nintendo’s Most Underrated Series Gets Its Best Entry Yet

Pikmin 4 Review: Nintendo’s Most Underrated Series Gets Its Best Entry Yet

Pikmin has always been Nintendo’s quiet achiever — never the console seller, never the headline grabber, but always delivering something genuinely unique. Pikmin 4 doesn’t just continue that tradition; it perfects it.

    What’s New

    pikmin 3 deluxe

The biggest addition is Oatchi, a lovable space dog who serves as both a mount and an additional Pikmin-like helper. Far from being a gimmick, Oatchi fundamentally changes how you approach puzzles and exploration. You can ride him across water, use him to carry heavy objects, and even have him lead a separate squad of Pikmin. The strategic possibilities are wonderful.

The new night missions add a tower-defense twist that’s more engaging than it has any right to be, and Dandori Battles offer frantic competitive challenges that test your multitasking skills to the limit.

    The Verdict

Pikmin 4 is the most accessible entry in the series while also being the deepest. The difficulty curve is gentle enough for newcomers but the post-game content will challenge veterans. The time-rewind feature removes frustration without removing tension. It’s a masterclass in game design.

Score: 9.5/10 — A near-perfect blend of strategy, exploration, and charm. If you own a Switch, you owe it to yourself to play this.

  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom — Everything We Know So Far

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom — Everything We Know So Far

The hype is real, folks. With just weeks to go until the launch of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, we’ve compiled everything we know about what could be the biggest Switch game ever made.

A Direct Sequel to Breath of the Wild

the legend of zelda: breath of the wild

Tears of the Kingdom picks up where Breath of the Wild left off, with Link and Zelda exploring beneath Hyrule Castle. From the trailers, we know the game features vast sky islands above Hyrule, new abilities that let Link manipulate objects in creative ways, and what appears to be a significantly darker narrative than its predecessor.

Nintendo has been characteristically tight-lipped about story details, but the glimpses we’ve seen suggest a game that builds on everything that made BOTW special while adding entirely new dimensions — literally.

    New Abilities

The gameplay trailers have shown off several new abilities including Ultrahand (grab and manipulate objects), Fuse (combine items to create new weapons), Ascend (phase through ceilings), and Recall (reverse the movement of objects). These abilities seem designed to push creative problem-solving even further than the original.

  • Why EarthBound Prices Keep Climbing (And Whether It’s Worth the Investment)

Why EarthBound Prices Keep Climbing (And Whether It’s Worth the Investment)

If you’ve been eyeing a copy of EarthBound for the SNES, you’ve probably noticed the prices. A loose cartridge regularly sells for $200+, while complete-in-box copies can fetch $800 or more. So what’s driving these prices, and is it worth it?

    The Perfect Storm of Value

    super metroid (snes) - cib

EarthBound hits a rare trifecta in the retro collecting world: it was under-produced at launch (selling poorly in the West initially), it has an incredibly dedicated cult following that has only grown over time, and it’s genuinely one of the best RPGs ever made. Add in Nintendo’s reluctance to make it widely available digitally for years, and you have a recipe for high demand and limited supply.

The original run included the oversized box with a strategy guide, making CIB copies particularly scarce since many boxes were damaged or discarded.

Is It Worth Playing in 2023?

Absolutely, unequivocally yes. EarthBound’s quirky humor, memorable characters, and surprisingly deep emotional moments hold up beautifully. The combat system is unique with its rolling HP meter, and the soundtrack is legendary. It’s a game that feels timeless in a way few others do.

As for whether it’s worth the investment as a collector’s piece — that depends on your budget and priorities. Prices have shown consistent upward trends over the past decade. We currently have a few cartridge-only copies in stock. Check our SNES collection.
